Don’t get me wrong I love my customers, but every once in a while I am tested. Yes, I say tested because I still haven’t learned my lesson. When I started out in business I thought, wrongly of course, that “there is no such thing as a bad customer”. Yes, I know I was naive. If you think the customer is always right you are too weak to succeed in business. I am sorry, I had to say it, but it is true.

I am sure you have heard before “Fire bad customers. Don’t put up with them.” But, if you are like me, you have put up with them. And, what happened? You have suffered. Your business suffered. Your other, good and loyal, customers suffered. Why, because you were too weak.

You have put up with all that ugliness because you were too afraid to do the right thing. You would think that doing the right thing is easy, but it is the exact opposite. It is hard. Often, doing the right thing is the hardest thing you will do.

Firing a customer feels like you are taking bread away from your children. But, in reality, what you say to the world is that “I love my customers. I love them so much that I am not going to allow a bad apple to infect them.”

I build websites for companies, and on occasion I had to fire customers. I didn’t enjoy it, but it had to be done for the sake of my business and the sake of my customers. See, bad customers are like a virus. They infect everything about your business and your life. They keep you up at night. They call, email, and nag you. They ask the same questions over-and-over. You know the type. And on top of everything, they always question the bill. Why are you charging me for this and that?

It is your responsibility to get rid of bad customers quickly. Do it politely, but do it. It will free you. It will help you focus on the good in your business. It will make you more profitable. Most importantly it will make you happy.

Now go fire that pain in the a$$ customer. You know which one I am talking about.
